There are many things that we can sacrifice for Lent, but I would like to suggest the possibility of giving up complaining for Lent. We live in a society that is becoming increasingly toxic in its criticisms, negativity, sarcasm and bitterness. As we probably all learned as children, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all!” If we could embrace the challenge of St. Paul to say only the good things that people need to hear (Eph. 4:29), our world would be a lot more supportive.
